Our Next Event

Mark Migotti (University of Calgary; The Apeiron Society of Calgary):  “Excellence of a Human and Political Kind”: Socrates and the City; Rhetoric and Argument; Philosophy and Truth

Description: In the bulk of this talk I will mine the first few pages of Socrates’s speech in response to the charges laid against him of not believing in the gods of the Athens for insight into his conception of philosophy and his approach to it. In the course of doing this, I will comment on his characteristic mode of philosophical discussion, the elenchus; a testing of beliefs by question and answer, objection and refutation, and on his conception of the good life for human beings.
